A Fire Island gathering as seen by a sitcom writer

by Anthony Glassman

At the summer home "Ill Repute" in the Pines of Fire Island, ancestral home of timesharing gay men since the dawn of recorded history, seven men gather to live, love and learn in Reality Theatre's production of Chuck Ranberg's End of the World Party.

Hunter, an alcoholic architect, tries to stand apart from the frenzied mating around him, serving as the vox dei, looking at all that occurs around him. His fellow summertime veteran Roger, an aging model, worries constantly about the effects of advancing years on his career. Despite his fears, however, he still manages to hook up with Chip, a youngster who at first is attached to Roger and then to Hunter's friend Nick.

Nick kicks his young paramour to the curb when the scamp dares to ask for more than a sexual tryst. Nick, you see, believes sex is for fun, and he wants to have lots of fun.

He, however, is not the Blanche Devereaux of the group. That title goes to Will. The philosopher-priest is Travis.

The final member of the gang is the newcomer Phil, just "off the bus" from Minnesota and eager to jump into the magical place that informed all gay fiction of the 1970s.

Drugs and sex abound in End of the World Party, but it is definitely not to be mistaken for Party, the similarly-named but far more vapid piece of drama that played last year in Cleveland.

Ranberg's piece is a comedic examination of the everyday epiphanies the men have, the growing they do. It has been compared (re-

peatedly) to Terrence McNally's Love! Valour! Compassion!, and not unfavorably. The humor is fast-paced, as is the action. most likely a product of Ranberg's day job: award-winning sitcom writer.

Yep. It's true. He's nabbed five Emmy Awards for Frasier, wrote for Kate and Allie and co-created Nathan Lane's short-lived sitcom Encore! Encore!, as well as serving as a consultant on Ted Danson's series Becker.

Directed by Mollie Levin, the Reality Theatre production features Lee Kelly as Hunter and Troy Brown as Roger. Phil is played by Christopher Dean, Bill Salmons portrays Will, Trace Kingham is Nick and Brian Cheslik and Dan Henry round out the cast as Chip and Travis.

Reality Theatre continues its tradition of bringing the best in gay theater to central Ohio, a never-ending quest that has brought them great acclaim, though far less than they deserve.

The play runs Thursdays through Sundays from May 30 to June 29, with no performances on June 2, 8, or 9. May 30 is a preview fundraiser, and May 31 is a special preview fundraiser for Stonewall Columbus. Both nights are $25 per person and require reservations.

The rest of the performances are $18, $16 for senior citizens, $14 for students and those who are differently-abled. Thursday and Sunday performances are two-for-one on regularly-priced tickets.

The theater is located at 736 N. Pearl St, Columbus, and can be reached at 614294-7541.
